What was I watching this week?

Not a damn thing. I was on holiday from work this week and we were out and about for most of the week so nothing got watched.

What was I reading this week

Sardonicsmiley’s High School Heroes series via the wayback machine Because it turns out if only ever read the first part before? What the funk?

What was I writing this week?

I took the week off from writing but a fic is brewing in my head and I’m itching to get started on it. We’ll see how it goes...

What was I watching this week?

I’d fallen behind on season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery so I spent a chunk of my Saturday catching up on that and, damn, this series is going from strength to strength. Michelle Yeoh steals every single episode she’s in, I love her Georgiou so so much. I really like how grey the character is, she’s not an outright villain and the writers are humanising her. I also think Anson amount is the most perfect Pike ever and I’m really liking Ethan Peck as Spock.

What was I reading this week

Nothing new. It was a week of reading old favourite fics. I had a hankering for DADT repeal fics so I read about half a dozen of those. Book wise, I’m currently reading The Lingering by SJI Holliday which was a random pick up from Waterstones last weekend. It’s a slow starter but intriguing. I’m hoping my attention doesn’t wander before I finish which happens more and more often to me these days.

[personal profile] amycooper tagged me in a tumblr dialogue prompt post a while ago and I accepted the challenge to write one fic with all six lines of dialogue from the prompt in it. So I got around to actually following through on that this week. As mentioned above, I was reading a lot of DADT repeal fic so that’s the direction I went. Telling Rodney on AO3

I’m starting to plan my [community profile] atlantisfilmfestival fic but I’m torn between three films at the moment. I think I might dedicate one night this week to each and see which flows better and take it from there.

Queer Eye Season 3 dropped on Netflix on Friday and I mainlined it like the addict I am. So uplifting, so heartwarming, so wonderful. The bit with the wooden box and the carved “PS be nice to your brother” DESTROYED me. That and Shorty getting her new teeth. Despite what [personal profile] popkin16 thinks I cry like a baby at sentiment!

And since I’m mentioning Queer Eye I would be remiss if I did not mention Friday, I’m in Love by mattygroves which is a wonderful Queer Eye/SGA crossover!

What was I reading this week

A recent tweet by one of my favourite comic book artists (Ryan Ottley) reminded me that I never finished his and Roger Kirkman’s Invincible comic. So I picked up the last few trade paperbacks that I was missing. It’s been a while since I read the book so I’ve went back to the start and have worked my way through the first 5 volumes this week. It’s such a gleeful, unabashed superhero book which came at a time when superhero books were all postmodern and moody and I love it so so much.

What was I writing this week?

My tumblr shadow ban has been lifted! Now that my blog is searchable again I went through it and archived any ficlets that only existed there on AO3. No new SGA but there were a handful of Star Wars ficlets.

In SGA news though, Pegasus Gym is now complete! Woo! I feel like I’ve got my writing motivation back a little so I’m gonna try and keep running with it and tackle some prompts that I’ve had in my tumblr inbox for a while.

I went to see Captain Marvel today and I really, really enjoyed it. Much more than I expected to. I actually first pumped at one point, lol. There is still something thrilling about seeing a female superhero and I genuinely came out the cinema feeling taller and like I could do anything and..is this how guys feel all the time?

What was I reading this week

I finally finished Becky Chambers’ follow up to ‘The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet’. ‘A Closed and Common Orbit’ May have taken me longer to get through but I think it might be a better book. Like the first one, it left me with a warm, happy feeling. The third in the series is out in paperback now. I did check my local bookstore but they didn’t have it so I guess I’ll have to give my money to Amazon which I try to do as little as possible.

What was I writing this week?

I got another chapter of Pegasus Gym posted. It ends in a cliffie, sorry, but the last chapter should be up sometime in the coming week.

I’d also like to use this as another opportunity to pimp [community profile] atlantisfilmfestival which is open for posting now!

What was I watching this week?

More Grey’s Anatomy than is really healthy, lol. It’s giving me so many great ways to hurt Rodney though! My hurt Rodney ideas folder is filled to the brim. I’ve always really really loved kisahawklin’s unfinished and discontinued Untitled ER AU and this Greys rewatch is giving me lots of ideas to write something similar.

What was I reading this week

I’ve been feeling ill this week which means that I want the fic I read to hurt too. During a search for death fic (yes, I do that) I came across one I’ve never read before and wow did it sucker punch me! I Got Soul But I’m Not A Soldier by minervacat

What was I writing this week?

I’m officially 3/5ths of the way through the short WIP I’m posting. I wrote and up posted the third part yesterday from my blanket burrito. It may not make sense. If it doesn’t, I’ll fic it when I’m better!

What was I watching this week?

Mostly Grey’s Anatomy which I decided to go back to the start on. They’re all so young in Season 1!

I also started watching The Umbrella Academy on Netflix and it’s probably only ok but my head has done that thing where it’s picked a character and went “yes, you. Welcome to the family” so basically that means I’m in love with the show. Ah, a fangirl’s life.

What was I reading this week

A new SGA series has begun posting on AO3 that I’ve found really interesting. Rodney gets a late in life diagnosis for autism that causes him to reevaluate some things. I’m really looking forward to more in the series.

What was I writing this week?

I finished and posted the second chapter of my WIP but words are still hard to find. I’m trying not to stress too much, they’ll come back when they come back.

What was I watching this week?

I missed the Lady Gaga/Bradley Cooper A Star Is Born at the cinema so I only got round to watching it this week and WOW! It destroyed me. Beautifully, beautifully done. I’ve never seen the original but the Garland and Streisand versions are two of my favourite films. This version deserves to share space with them.

What was I reading this week

[personal profile] popkin16 and I were chatting briefly last week and the topic of ‘how much angst is too much angst?’ came up and popkin mentioned Black Helicopters by Whizzy. I read the first part of this a couple of years ago and didnt remember it being that angsty so, of course, I had to reread and then read the rest of the series. I still say it’s not too angsty and I’m urging popkin to read it, lol.

I also caught up on the lastest part of a really excellent SGA gen series, Team Building by LadyShelley

What was I writing this week?

I am struggling with the whole writing thing lately. I’m not short of ideas but I just lack the mental energy to write them. It’s not been this bad in a long time. In an effort to kick myself up the backside I posted the first 1,600 words or so of a fic I’ve been working on. Doing the WIP thing makes me mildly uncomfortable but it’s a necessary evil sometimes!

What was I watching this week?

It was a week for guilty pleasure TV. After listening to my Mum and sister catch me up on the TV gossip last weekend I noticed that season 14 is now on Prime so I’ve spent most nights this week unwinding to Greys Anatomy which is one of my guiltiest Tv pleasures. It’s a strangely compelling mix of angst, trashy soap and eye candy. It’s been exactly what I need this week.

I also watched the entire third season of One Day At A Time yesterday on Netflix. I still enjoyed it but it didn’t crawl up in my heart like season 2 did. Maybe I wasn’t in the right mood?

What was I reading this week

Honestly, not much! It was one of those weeks where I couldn’t really concentrate on much. I did go back to a few old favourite McShep fics just to read that one specific bit; you know what I mean, right? That one bit of a fic that makes your chest squeeze or puts the smile on your face like nothing else?

What was I writing this week?

I managed to get a little something written and posted on Saturday! Yay me. I’m hoping now that my work has calmed down a bit I can spare some energy to start writing more from next week as I’m way behind my 2019 goals!

What was I watching this week?

I was browsing Netflix and started watching American Crime Story: The People vs OJ Simpson. I was about 11 or 12 when this was happening and keeping up with the news wasn't exactly a priority for me then so I don't actually know that much about the reality of the whole case. That being said, I've enjoyed the episodes I've watched so far. John Travolta is really good in it and that's not something I'd ever thought I'd say!

What was I reading this week

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers.

I picked this book up at random in the book store a couple of weeks ago because I liked the title. (Sure, don't judge a book by its cover but the title is fair game!). I started reading it immediately and I quickly fell in love with this universe and these characters. It's sci-fi with amazing world building and sci-fi that doesn't shy away from very non-human characters, which I love. It's a strange book in that nothing much really happens but I didn't mind that, I was just enjoying the hell out of my time with the characters and the found family they created for themselves. I've picked up the sequel (sadly, only in the same universe, not with the same set of characters) which I'll start on this week. Highly recommended! (You can tell I liked it because I'm already thinking about how to McShep it...)

What was I watching this week?

I Comfort watched a few SGA episodes this week. Mostly Rodney heavy ones because, y’know, obsession. I always fall back in love with the characters when I rewatch. Reading so much fic can give you a skewed version of their voices sometimes but then the episodes remind you of the real them and it’s like coming home.

Also, can I just say: The Good Place finale? I am still not ok.

ST:DSC was fantastic this week though! I’m loving Anson Mount as Pike and I really loved the classic Trek feel to this episode. Also, Tilly is everything.

What was I reading this week

Now I could have sworn I’d read Cardiogenesis: The Heart of the Matter by kisahawkin but apparently not all the way through because despite the start being familiar it veered into unfamiliar territory and I hadn’t left kudos. I’ve read it now and it was wonderful. I loved John and Jennifer being friends in it. It made a nice and welcome change from the usual Keller bashing (although I do enjoy that sometimes too).

I’m also the thirds way of the way through an AcTual Book!! I’ll post about that one when I finish it this week :)

What was I writing this week?

I managed to get a small something written and posted yesterday but words have been slow to come due to real life mental exhaustion.

What was I watching this week?

This week I binged Netflix’s Sex Education which I watched over the course of two nights. I started watching it because of Gillian Anderson (I will watch anything she’s in) but kept watching it for the surprising heart the show had and the excellent character development. It ended a bit abruptly but I enjoyed it enough to hope they get a second series.

The only problem I had with it is that I really, really wanted the main character to be asexual. It seemed like that’s what they were going for in the first few episodes (not only asexual but a sex-repulsed asexual, how often does that get represented in media??) but then it all went a bit wrong, with him “getting over” his issues. I still think he’s a least demi but it was disappointing to have the asexual rug pulled out from beneath me.

Star Trek: Discovery started back up this week too and I really enjoyed the first episode. I loved their Pike and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season!

What was I reading this week

I have no idea how I missed these fics before because I love Mrs Hamill but I only just got around to reading Slouching Towards Bethlehem and it’s sequel (which I’m about half way through). So good. Big, epic, sweeping. I feel like every SGA writer has to write an Atlantis cut off from Earth story at some point and this is one of the best I’ve read!

Outside of fanfic, I got round to reading My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. I’ve been lucky enough to meet Sean Phillips at a couple of cons (we have some lovely art work by him) and I adore his art. It’s a very short graphic novella but it packs a punch and some of Ed Brubaker’s words in it will stay with me for a while. We ordered from Sean’s own big cartel store which is great because he always draws a quick marker head sketch in the books.

I’ve given up on ‘Pride: The Unlikely Story of the Unsung Heroes of the Miners’ Strike’.

What was I writing this week?

I threw some words at my possible [community profile] romancingmcshep entry but I’m not happy with how it’s turning out. A tumblr post I saw the other day has given me another idea though which I’ll hopefully have time to explore this week. I’ve also planned out a couple of possibilities for my [community profile] atlantisfilmfestival fic. Nothing posted this week unfortunately because work was very full on!

What was I watching this week?

Not a thing. It’s been a pretty fandom light week seeing as my partner has been off work. This means the evenings and weekend day I normally get to myself have been spent with him so the TV has barely been on.

What was I reading this week

Because I haven’t had much alone free time I’ve not wanted to concentrate on anything new so have been dipping in and out of an old favourite: Keira Marcos’ Ties That Bind series.. It’s a big comfort fic for me. Speaking of that, as part of [community profile] snowflake_challenge I posted asking people to share their own favourite holy grail fics here and I have so many interesting fic bookmarked now!

Outside of fanfic I’m technically still reading ‘Pride: The Unlikely Story of the Unsung Heroes of the Miners’ Strike’ which covers the same story as the wonderful film ‘Pride’ but I haven’t made any progress on it....

What was I writing this week?

I thought a lot about writing this week but the lack of alone time meant that nothing made it to the page. That’s how it goes sometimes and I wouldn’t exchange my time with my partner for any of it. I’ll have the time to be more fandom focussed next week!

So, I’m experimenting with a format for a weekly update. I’m gonna separate fandom and personal stuff and see how that works... Bear with me until I get this right...

What was I watching this week?

The Haunting of Hill House ate my brain this week. I started watching it on Tuesday and finished it on a Friday and it was freaking amazing. I haven’t read the book (although it has now been downloaded to my kindle) so I can’t compare it; I’ve heard it’s very different. It wasn’t as scary as I feared. Ghosts and the paranormal usually freak me out but I was able to put the light out every night without a second thought. For me, it was less about ghosts and more about family. The end was beautiful and made me cry. Highly recommend 9/10.

I also caught up on the last couple episodes of Lucifer season 3. Knowing that it ended on a cliffhanger and was (temporarily) cancelled, I had made the choice not to finish it but seeing as Netflix has picked it up for a fourth season I figured it was safe to watch and HOLY CRAP! I am sooooo glad it didn’t end there! I’m super excited about season 4!

What was I reading this week

I’ve been reading The First Prime Universe by LadyRa. I haven’t read much SG-1 fic but I love LadyRa’s SGA fic and the pairing for this intrigued me so I started reading and devoured the first two parts this week. It’s reminding me how much I love Jack O’Neill which I count as a win.

Outside of fanfic I’ve been reading ‘Pride: The Unlikely Story of the Unsung Heroes of the Miners’ Strike’ which covers the same story as the wonderful film ‘Pride’. I loved the film so much and got the book for Christmas. I’ve only read a couple of chapters so far so can’t comment much on it yet.

What was I writing this week?
Not much! Writers block set in hard and I spent most of the week flitting from WIP to WIP, adding a few words here and there. I did manage to finish off a fic that I started back in June last year which you can find here. I thought aftercare as a kink would be pretty niche (ie, only of interest to me) but I’ve had so many wonderful comments on it which is both surprising and very welcome!
