Day 12

In your own space, create your own challenge.

I’ve been going through the replies on this one and there are so many great responses. From awakening dead comms to creating a transformative works statement to stop lurking to making a fanlore page! I fully condone them all and I’m gonna participate in a lot of them.

My challenge is to share your favourite fanwork of all time; that one fic or piece of art or Podfic (or whatever) that you revisit when you just NEED to experience it again. I love hearing about people’s holy grail of fanworks!

I’ll go first and share mine (surprising no one it’s SGA):

The Body Holographic by Leah (Taste_is_sweet) and Springwoof. This is my favourite fic of all time. It rips my heart out and has me sobbing each and every time I read it. But, like, cathartic sobbing. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of this fic.

Mine is also SGA and, funnily enough, also by taste_is_sweet: Keepsakes. The bug!John fic we all deserve!

Intersections (23885 words) by Kaneko
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard
Additional Tags: Podfic Available, Pre-Canon, Antarctica, Angst, Humor, First Time, Hiking, Tent Sex
Summary:

Rodney's Antarctica is a lot like Siberia in that it's full of scientists who work 16-hour days and bathe once a week (twice when they're feeling social), and who would slit your throat for a fresh banana. Also, you can't go for a walk without a survival kit, but that's fine - Rodney's never really been an outdoorsy person.

I love this story so much that I've been careful with how many times I've read it so the shiny doesn't wear off. It's so full of feelings and excellent writing that it stuns me every time.

Thanks for link! I'm putting that on my to-read list. :)

My immediate answer to this is probably Flight, a Supernatural fic by Northernsparrow, but that one's really well known, so I will instead give you this one, which is way underappreciated and makes me laugh every single time I reread it:

Syndicated Sci-Fi Show by claudiapriscus. It's a crossover between SG1 and Supernatural, set in the middle of the Supernatural episode where the trickster makes them live through a bunch of TV shows. The brothers get stuck in the SG1 universe and think it's another TV show, so they don't take anything seriously, but it's actually not. The SGC's perspective on the boys' bizarre behavior is absolutely hilarious and really in-character.

I'm going to have to sit with this question for a bit - I have a lot of ficcly loves and fandoms to consider. This is an excellent challenge [that I'm going to watch like a hawk for more things to add to my to-read list!]. :D

There are probably a lot if I let myself think about previous fandoms, but one of my favorite fic to revisit now is Speranza's 4 Minute Window series. (MCU; Steve/Bucky; NC17) I've read the first fic in the series (of the same name) so many times.

Bookmarking to read later! (It's listed as part 2 in a series. Do I need to read part 1 first? Some authors put things that are only loosely related in a series and others it's a literal "must read part 1 first" situation and I'm never sure.)

What a great challenge. I'll definitely be bookmarking other peoples recs.

My all time comfort fic is Letters by tabaqui (posted at AO3 under her scarecrow horses account). This is post series Buffy 'verse with Spike and Xander as two lost souls who've given everything to the fight and have no idea how to face the future. This is beautiful and I never tire of reading it.

So, Body Holographic kills my Every. Damn. Time. because OH DEAR GOD THE ANGST. It's like ramped up to nine thousand!

Ok, so things I have to go back to over and over again - this, right here. It earned the title of That Picture in the HP fan community and inspired a bunch of fanfic based on it. I mean... OF COURSE IT DID! LOOK AT IT!

So, yeah. From time to time, I just gaze at all the beautiful details and imagine and the possible situations that could have led to this moment and then, usually, go read a bunch of the associated stories.

Where are the stories, you may ask? Why, right here...

That Picture is so so so good. Except that link doesn't work because Tumblr is trash. They might think it's Sensitive. I've seen that error before.

Since you mentioned SGA, here's mine from that fandom: Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead by speranza. Despite its hard-hitting bits, it is such a comfort read for me because it's filled with a million great lines, things that I find myself repeating in certain moments ("I usually listen with my eyes closed") and it's just... it's about people who know each other in an intimate way that isn't about sex (and also is about sex).

This was way harder than I expected. There really doesn't seem to be just one favorite fic for me. Each at different times, for different reasons. Sometimes not even one favorite for a given pairing. Without looking at AO3, I can think of at least 10 fics (and there probably are at least 10 more besides) all truly tied for my favorite. Almost all my fandoms were already closed when I found them, possibly that makes a difference?

I haven't hit the showstopper fic yet, the one that I really need to have with me at all times, but I do have plenty of really good ones in my recommendations file. I think the closest to a "whoa, I want this one on hand always" that I've gotten is This American Life, Episode 141: A Whole New World, because it's all about the girls who go to strange and magical places, and it feels just like an episode of This American Life.

This is my very favorite fic (fair warning, currently a WIP), and honestly, I feel like the less I say about it, the better-- saying it's set in the MCU doesn't really describe it very accurately, talking about the crossover stuff makes it sound a lot crackier than it is... but it's the one that I get the most excited over when it updates.

22degreehalo: The Great Hall from Harry Potter at Christmas, animated snow at the ceiling. (Harry Potter)
From: [personal profile] 22degreehalo
For this, I think it's got to be The Shoebox Project (Harry Potter). I first read it in high school and it was one of the earliest fics I fell in love with, and every single time I return to it I only find myself enoying it even more. So much of the commentary about growing up and figuring out who you are is still so relevant, and I can't ignore how great the romance is or even more so how funny it is!! I rarely reread things but this I could reread over and over!
