Everyone has that one fanwork....

So, one of my most popular posts on tumblr is a lament about that one fic that we all have that we wish more people had read, the one that we’re proud of that just didn’t get it’s fair due.

(I’d link the tumblr post but tumblr has still got my blog flagged as adult and it doesn’t show up in search results: have I mentioned how bitter I am about that?)

Anyway, it got me thinking that maybe DW would be a good place to expand on that post and ask people to share the fic (or art, or any other kind of fanwork) that fills this space in their heart. Call it a meme and post it to your own blog or just share it in the comments below; whatever! All I know is that those works that we poured our heart and soul into deserve the chance to find a wider audience!

Mine is It Can’t Rain All The Time which is a fusion between Stargate Atlantis and Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series with John in the role of the second incarnation of Dream and Rodney as the mortal he falls in love with.

I mean, I don’t know if it’s super confusing to anyone who doesn’t know Sandman (although the few do,Kent’s have suggested not) but I have this special place in my heart for this fic and I wish more people had read it. It has 520 hits at this particular time and date and I think about 100 of them are mine from rereading it!

So, what’s your “I wish this had reached a wider audience” fic?

I love The Sandman (and also the title from the Crow). That’s awesome!

I think the fic I am proudest of that no one reads is called Thank You and Amen (Love, Sam), an SPN fic from season 9 before we learned who Gadreel really was. I read the entire Book ot Enoch to learn about Gadreel and explored some of the implications about Sam’s spirituality hinted at in the season 2 or 3 ep Houses of the Holy.

That’s way beyond when I stopped watching Supernatural, lol. But I read it and it’s beautiful! Even if I don’t know who Gadreel is! I’m so impressed at all the reading you did to prepare for it!

Thank you so much! I’ve been fascinated by angels since watching Neon Genesis Evangelion as a kid, and when I learned that Gadreel was taken from the Book of Enoch I had to check it out.

Just read it, and it was great! I liked the idea of Rodney exploring Atlantis in his dreams, and I'm always a fan of effective immortality/post-mortality in a happy ending. Question, though it didn't necessarily seem important: what was John before he became Dream, or I guess how did he become Dream?

Also, nice idea about posting-the-fic-you-wished-got-more-reads, because otherwise, I probably would've looked at the fandom tags and thought, "What's the Sandman?" and then passed by without looking. But the romance made perfect sense and was really good even without knowing anything about that series. :)

If I were to list my own "wish-this-had-a-bigger-audience" fic, I guess I'd pick my Paleolithic SPN AU with the neanderthal!Dean/homosapien!Cas pairing. It's honestly done pretty well and I have nothing to complain about, but I've always wondered if there are people who saw the neanderthal tag and went "hell, no!" I guess I just want more people to think that neanderthals are cute, ha ha

Lol, I can see why caveman AU might put people off but I’ve read a really awesome SGA one so I’m game!

And as for How John became Dream. It’s complicated to explain if you haven’t read the comics but in them there’s a woman who becomes pregnant while in the Dreaming world and the baby she gives birth to is kind of Dream’s kid? He visits her after the baby is born, names him Daniel and Daniel becomes the new Dream when the first one dies. So, I kind of made John Daniel. It made sense to me!

Ohhhh, that clears up the Daniel thing, too! I figured that bit was a Sandman reference I didn't get. :)

But wait! Dream isn't immortal!? Does John's happy ending with post-mortal Rodney have a time limit??

If I recall, none of them are truly immortal. When the universe ends, the endless will leave too but there were super extenuating circumstances that are waaaaay too complicated to go into for the first Dream to die so I think John and Rodney have millennia together to look forward to :)
