Accidentally mating for life - this prompt is killing me!

I need to fill the above prompt for my hc Bingo Card and I am completely blocked on how to fill it.

Any scenarios I come up with involve either ABO (which I kind of hate and don’t want to write) or are pure fantasy AUs (werewolves, magic, etc..) that would involve way too much worldbuilding for me to knock out a less than 4K fill (all I have time for).

I also have the problem that the characters in SGA are older and pretty damn smart. I can’t see them ‘accidentally’ forgetting the rules of their universe and mating for life when they don’t want to.

I’m really struggling for this one. Anyone got any ideas?

SGA. Hm. Maybe some kind of Ancient gizmo mates them for life? So they're already in love or something, but the gizmo puts a mated-for-life bond on them, so if one dies the other dies, and there lies the peril/hurt?

I’ve considered that but it feels too similar to my last fill. I’ think maybe doing this and forced soulbonding right next to each other is screwing wth my muse as they’re pretty much the same...at least the way I filled forced soulbonding they are.

I noticed in the Snowflake Challenge that I was repeating the same same answers several times over for some of the daily posts. It seems unfair that those squares are almost identical. I’ve been thinking about it over the last several hours, but I keep coming up with the plots of stories I have already read. 😒

I think the closest I’ve come to a workable idea is Rodney being an alien (in a canon AU where the SGC actually works with the people from other worlds) whose species mates for life. Except John never read that part of Rodney’s file....

Hmmmm. Maybe accidental animal transformation? Turned into swans, accidental mate for life?

Or maybe not so much ACTUALLY mating for life as everyone mocking them about it and them being indignant and hurt and then retreating to commiserate and realizing they love each other?

Less hurt, more comfort?
