Fandom Snowflake Challenge: Day 3

Day 3

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

I’ve been sitting looking at this question for a long time. I took a break, watched an episode of The Haunting of Hill House and came back to it and I’m still struggling to pick a piece of canon anything to talk about it. I think that the reason I’m struggling with this one is that it isn’t moments that make me fall in love with a piece of canon, it’s the characters.

I mean, take Stargate as an example. I think, all things being equal, SG-1 is a better show. Going by plot and storylines and all that stuff that should be important, it’s a better show. But I love Atlantis more.

Because Atlantis gave me Rodney McKay (yes, I know he was on SG-1 first but y’know what I mean). When I think about all of my favourite books, Tv shows or movies, they all have one thing in common. They all have a character or sometimes even a group of characters that resonated with me, that pulled me in and made me take notice of everything else.

It’s not that they remind me of myself; in most cases the opposite is true. Sometimes they’re who I would like to be and sometimes they’re who I’m really glad I’m not. Whatever way it goes, the character is always more important to me than the story. I’m one of those people who would quite gladly watch my favourite character watch paint dry.

When I really think about it, I feel like I’ve always been this way. Every major fandom I’ve fangirled over can be traced back to that one character that hooked me in. And, from the moment he walked into that cloud of energy in episode 2, Rodney McKay has been my tether to SGA. Which seems to be my forever fandom. Not that I’m complaining.

I can watch SG-1 over and over, and I have. I love it, and I think it is a better show than SGA, but I've never felt that fannish about SG-1. I read fic for it. I have an icon. But I've devoted so much more energy (and icon space) to SGA, and it's because of the characters. John and Rodney specifically. They just grabbed me in a way the SG-1 team didn't (even though I love them!) and I wanted to write about them in order to figure them out.

And also because the show's not as good, I feel like there's more room for me to get in there and dig around and tell my own stories.

Characters are so important! When a group of actors/characters gel like they did on SGA it's marvelous.

For me it's a pairing, McShep forever, but you can't not love Rodney McKay.

YES. I will watch a TERRIBLE show if I love the characters, to be honest. I agree that SG-1 is objectively the better show, but I feel no urge to explore the show in fic (unless John and/or Rodney are in it). I've tried reading pure Jack/Daniel or Jack/Sam fics, but I always end up quitting not far in. I haven't even finished my SG-1 watch...I should really start that over.

It's so funny. I fell for Rodney McKay the SECOND I saw him in that warm orange fleece ♥ I was enjoying the McShep, but the show itself didn't really hook me until The Storm/The Eye.

This is so true. I will take character(s) I can care about over great plots/effects any day. The plot can be everything I should be excited about but if I have no connection to it via a character I can get behind it's always going to fail somewhat for me.

Hee! I love your SGA fic, and the decision to walk into the energy creature was the moment that resonated with me, and I posted about. It really is amazing how some characters can speak to us.
