Going back to work after two weeks off is never easy (the emails to wade through alone...) but I survived. Just.
It was a hell of a week. First off, our temp who has been helping us out since March and who we hoped would stay with us until the end of the calendar year announced that she’d gotten a permanent job offer elsewhere and would be leaving. She very kindly agreed to finish the week which she wasn’t obligated to do which was nice but it does leave us in a bit of a pickle. (although I’m super happy for her personally. I like her a lot and this job sounds perfect for her. I think she struggled with how “corporate”and segregated our company is, she’ll do much better at a smaller company).
Then I get an email from another department that a big project has suddenly moved from December to next week and we need to pay out millions of pounds that we are still in the process of agreeing with our lenders. The Chief Exec got pulled into that one and she is NOT happy. Heads will roll for this one!
Then my other colleague announced that her cancer has progressed again and she will likely be off again long term. It’s a funny one this. She had cancer maybe eight or so years ago, beat it, then it came back maybe a year/18 months ago. But instead of choosing to treat it then she decided to wait because (and honestly I don’t understand this) she had a cruise booked. It’s now spread even further so she’s finally going to start treatment again. I just hope it’s not too late. I guess you can never know how you’d react to something like this until it actually happens to you but I don’t understand her decisions.
So, yeah, tough first week back. Lots of changes to be made to the staffing team again. It will be interesting to see where my role fits in.
This week also saw mine and George’s fifteenth anniversary. Not that we’re married but it was back in 2003 that we went on our first date. I never would have believed that we’d still be together now but I’m very happy that we are!
The weekend was quiet. Saturday was spent writing and doing housework. Today we went to see a triple bill concert: KT Tunstall, The Pretenders, and Simple Minds. Missed the first half of KT Tunstall because we misjudged the timing of events. The Pretenders were amazing, Chrissie Hynde still sounds incredible! If I have half her energy at 67 I will count myself blessed! I didn’t stay for Simple Minds because the crowd were getting kind of drunk and rowdy and standing in an enclosed space (even if it was outdoors) with 10,000 people always makes me claustrophobic. I’m ok if it’s seated but the press of people standing and squeezing to get past you makes me really nervous and I could tell I’d reached my limits. We found a pretty empty spot to watch The Pretenders from but it was starting to get more packed as the main act approached. (Although in what world Simple Minds are ranked above The Pretenders I dont know!) Still, it was a local gig so I left George to finish it himself and he’ll make his own way home in an hour or two.
We have another gig in the same place next week for the opening of the new V&A museum. Fingers crossed it’s a better crowd.
I’m still plugging through my h/c Bingo Card and got another 2 fills done. My first fill of the week was kinda heavy on the hurt so I went more comforting on my second, lol. I think the next one might be another Rodney/Caldwell fic.
I made a start on my fandomgiftbox gifts. Both of which will be McDex fics!
No progress on the reverse bang fics. Still plenty of time though. I’ve gotten out of the habit of writing during the week, leaving it all to Friday pm and Saturday instead. I’ll need to change that up if I want to meet all my deadlines!
